The Invitation of Christmas

The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery which is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Col 1:26-27).

Recently, I received an invitation from a woman in my neighborhood to attend her 38th birthday party. Ladies only. Cristina is one of the few friends I have made in our neighborhood since we moved here during the pandemic (outside of the amazing people of CCC, of course). She and I run into each other only now and then, but when we do, we always stop and have wonderful conversations. So naturally I was eager to purchase the perfect gift, put on some party clothes and set off to meet some other women who enjoy her company as well!

As I arrived at the party and began introducing myself to the other women, I learned that we were a diverse group of women in age, background, and even language. However, we were drawn together to be with and celebrate our gracious and generous host.

Not long into the evening, we were invited to gather around the dining table. Set in front of each of us was a small, blank canvas, some paints and paintbrush. After a brief guided painting exercise, Cristina asked us to share a little bit about ourselves and our paintings. It was very moving to hear the women share a little bit about themselves, quite vulnerably, in fact. They shared not just joys, but also sufferings.

The evening was rich, satisfying, and filled with some wonder. Honestly, it was glorious!  And it was "merely" a neighborhood birthday party.

Christmas is when we celebrate the birthday of our Savior. Jesus, the long-awaited, promised Messiah of whom the prophets spoke centuries before. But to this celebration, ALL are invited.

Jesus draws all kinds of people into his life, as He offers His life to us. We then find ourselves offering our lives to Him and to one another. The strong help the weak, the confident encourage the fainthearted, healing flows to the sick -- and people start talking more and more about how wonderful the Host is! How grateful we are to have been invited and welcomed.

This Christmas, we have the opportunity to extend the invitation of Christ to those around us. Who are you praying for to meet our Wonderful Host?
