God’s Word Our Guide

1

Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).

Have you ever been to the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C.? It opened in 2017 and offers several fascinating exhibits. One, in particular, is called Washington Revelations and they describe it as a “flying theater.” Participants are taken on an aerial tour through the streets of our nation’s capital without having to leave the museum.

Visitors enter a dimly lit room and are led onto a platform that fits about two dozen people. The large movie screen at the front of the room comes alive with scenes of the city below as riders soar through the skies above. As the movie plays, the platform rises and tilts ever so gently so visitors really feel as if they are zooming through the air. The goal of this virtual excursion is to discover the many Biblical inscriptions that are found on historical buildings throughout the city.

Did you know that the United States Capitol building contains the inscription "Preserve me, O God, for in thee do I put my trust" (Psalm 16:1)? Or that there is a spot at Union Station that reads "The truth shall make you free" (John 8:32)? You might not be as surprised to learn that the Supreme Court Building contains all sorts of artwork depicting law-giving and justice motifs borrowed from the Bible. It is inspiring to see how the people involved in constructing these buildings years ago appeared to be Biblically-guided.

Imagine if you could get an aerial view of your life! What Scriptures would you see inscribed on the walls of your faith journey? At what points were you guided by the Words of Truth? Or perhaps you wish you had been? As followers of Jesus, we are called to be a people whose worldview and decisions are informed by Scripture. Beginning today, what places in your life need to be etched with these precious, life-giving Words?

Lord God, thank you that you have given us the Source for Truth to guide us in all of life. Give us each a yearning to know Your Word more deeply and allow it to guide us in all of life. In Your Son’s Name, Amen.

Love this, Elizabeth! It made me wonder what guiding Biblical principles and verses are etched (great verb choice, by the way!) on the “walls” of my life.
