Get to Know Jesus

“Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him’.” (John 3:1-2)

As we enter the season of Lent, we have been invited to “Step into the Story.” These next several weeks, we will walk through the three years of Jesus’ earthly ministry to His ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

Perhaps the Story of Jesus is new to you. Or maybe it is one that is so familiar that the weeks leading up to Resurrection Sunday race past each year without a change to your story. Are there some ways during this Lenten season you would like to get to know Jesus better, ways you would like to see your story changed by The Story?

In our passage this week, we meet a man named Nicodemus who seems to want to know more about Jesus. Nicodemus was a prominent religious leader, thoroughly versed in the Scriptures. Although he would have been familiar with various promises concerning the Messiah, he doesn’t yet know this is who Jesus really is.

Nicodemus likely saw Jesus out and about in Jerusalem, turning heads with His miracles and turning tables in the temple (see chapter 2). He then decides to approach Jesus one evening to get to know Him a little better, to learn more about Him.

Before I started reading the Bible, I thought I knew Jesus. However, what I later learned was that I knew “about” Jesus, but I didn’t “know” Him. The more I read His Word, the more He reveals Himself, His character, His love and sacrifice.

This Lenten season, we are invited not to just learn more “about” Jesus, but to get to know Him more personally. We can “listen in” to his conversations. Be a part of His encounters as He expresses His love and mercy to those He meets on the journey to the cross.

Have you had the opportunity to sit quietly with Jesus lately? Maybe to ask Him to share a little about Himself with you? Would you like His Story to change yours? What steps might you take this Lenten season to get to know Jesus better?
