A Trusted Advisor

“Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book which has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord which is poured out on us because our fathers have not observed the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

So Hilkiah and those whom the king had told went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter); and they spoke to her regarding this. She said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me . . .’” (2 Chronicles 34:21-23).

Who do you go to when you need advice? Maybe you turn to a parent, a spouse, or a friend? When you have financial questions, perhaps you consult a financial planner, or retain a lawyer for legal matters. Having trusted advisors in our lives helps us to navigate the complex world in which we live.

In this portion of Scripture, we read about King Josiah. He began his reign at the very young age of eight years old. For this young king, seeking the advice and counsel of others is likely to have been a “best practice.” Given that he was one of just a few good kings (among many horrible ones) to reign over the southern kingdom of Judah, this practice served him well. After all, it was King Josiah’s earnestness to serve God faithfully that delayed God's judgment on the southern kingdom over which he ruled.

When Josiah’s servants found the precious scroll and he wanted to know what God had to say, he must have known that Huldah, the prophetess, was his “go-to gal.” While we don’t know a whole lot about Huldah, the fact that the King called on her indicates she had a reputation as being a trusted advisor and could help him know what was on the heart of God.

What about when you have questions regarding your faith? When you were a new believer, was there someone who would help guide you in your new walk with Jesus? Hopefully you still have someone in your life, maybe a pastor, a family member or a friend in your small group who will pray for you and help you discern God’s will and encourage you in following Jesus.

Regardless where we are in our faith journey, it is wise to have people in our lives who will remind us of the truth of God’s Word and encourage us to remain faithful to it.

Who is that trusted faith advisor in your life? Or are you one for someone else? Reach out to that person today and let them know how much you appreciate them and bless the Lord for bringing them into your life.
