Tacos and Pizza and Hope

1

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:17

We’re starting a new series this week called, Hope of Glory, and the first sermon in the series will focus on the “supremacy of Christ.” In thinking about what to write this week, the word “supreme” kept coming back to me. That led to me thinking about taco supremes from Taco Bell and supreme pizza, and…

…it’s very likely I should eat something before continuing to write!

All snacks aside, the definition of supremacy is “the state or condition of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status.”

Supreme tacos and pizzas are served with all the toppings, which is why they’re labeled as superior in status. The taco shells and pizza crusts hold all the toppings together and deliver them in one sometimes-messy-but-oh-so-delicious vehicle of savory goodness, and that is indeed supreme

I don’t think many of us put *that* much hope in tacos and pizza, even of the supreme variety, but perhaps it depends on the day. :)

What we can and should put our hope in is the supremacy of Christ, because, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (v17).”

The Message says it this way, “everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment (v16 and 17).”

He is indeed supreme.

The supremacy of Christ is absolutely something we can and should put our hope in. He was here before the existence of everything, and in Him everything came into existence. He has held everything together ever since in one sometimes-hard-but-oh-so-refining vehicle called life.

He does not crumble, and He has never fallen apart. There’s hope to be found in that–and not the kind we might put in tacos and pizza. Real hope, the life-giving kind that comes from knowing how the story began, how it ends, and Who holds it all together in the middle.

Thank you, God, for tacos and pizza, but also hope! When our world–and The World–appear to be unraveling, we know You are still holding it all together. Help us to see your reminders of this today. Amen.

Love this, Jessica! Not sure I’ll look at tacos and pizza the same again. What a good visual of our Savior holding everything together.
