Slide to the Left! Slide to the Right!

1

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him (John 2:11 ESV).

I have not been to many weddings in my life, but I have participated in a handful of school dances, both in middle school and in high school. They mainly consist of line dances, and one that I have done many times is the “Cha-Cha Slide.” The most memorable part of the song goes like this:

To the right now, to the left. Take it back now y'all.
One hop this time! One hop this time!
Right foot two stomps. Left foot two stomps.
Slide to the left! Slide to the right!
Criss-cross! Criss-cross! Cha-cha real smooth.

This song has the instructions for the dance. It tells you to, in some way, change your location on the dance floor; it tells you to, in some way, shift around the dance floor.

This week’s passage contains one of the most well-known miracles that Jesus ever did: the turning of water into wine! As important as that shift may be to talk about, I will be talking about a shift that seems to happen at the very end of the passage, in verse 11.

The shift that happened is that the disciples believed! Belief isn’t a completely mental thing, it’s also a change in actions and behavior. Believing in Our Lord and Savior is one of the largest shifts one can make in life. It is a “shift” because true belief frequently results in a change in behavior. The fruit of the Spirit is just one example of how one’s life can really change after belief.

After belief, the disciples trusted Jesus even more.  They left everything behind and followed him everywhere so they could hear everything he had to say. They trusted him enough to make a huge change in their lives just to live for him. Fishermen and tax collectors dropped everything they knew, and began to have relationships with Christ, as well as teach others all about Him.

Belief is like dancing in some ways. At first it may feel weird and awkward, but after a little time and some encouragement, it feels more and more natural. I think this is how the disciples felt at first: confused and awkward. However, they overcame this by listening to his sermons and watching his glorious miracles. The disciples shift around the dance floor of belief to be even closer to Jesus.

Next time you start dancing to a song, think about how you can slide (or dance!) even closer to the Lord in your relationship with Him.
