Opening Your Home to Jesus

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him…He came to that which was his own (John 1: 9-11).

John opens his Gospel by talking about the true light of the world. This true light is Jesus, and he’s coming into the world he created for us.  He’s not a visitor, coming only temporarily for the holiday, nor is he coming into our world as an unfamiliar guest.  John makes it clear that Jesus has been part of everything since the beginning. Jesus was with God at the beginning.  Jesus is the Word of God. The world was “made through him."

We all understand the pressure of making sure our homes look perfect for the holidays.  But one of my favorite feelings is when you have that friend or family member over that knows you and appreciates how hard you worked to make things beautiful. But they also know that you’ve hidden all that clutter which typically litters your family room in the hall closet, or not to open that closed bedroom door.  Yet they still love you, love spending time in your home, and love being a part of your life.

Now think about Jesus coming into your life this Christmas season.  Jesus is the source of everything. He’s the true light that created this world for us.  He knows about that “clutter” you’re trying to hide. He knows about the mess behind a locked door.  He knows how hard we try to hide the things we’re not proud of.

Being hospitable to Jesus means letting him in to all parts of our lives.  Not just at Christmas, but now and forever.  Jesus is that friend who knows your house isn’t always spotless. Not only does he love you regardless, but he’s also here to work alongside of you, to dig into those closets, sweep up the floors, and help get your home in order all of the time, not just for special occasions.

As we prepare ourselves and our homes for Christmas, think not just about how you can celebrate Jesus coming into our world, but how you can truly invite Jesus into all areas of your life. Nothing under the rug. No closets full of junk or closed bedroom doors.  Just you together with Jesus.
