Mighty God

“Mighty God …”

- from Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9 talks about the deliverance of God’s people. And this deliverance is going to require power. How do you feel about power?

Power can cause deep wounds.

The First Earl of Chatham (for whom Chatham County is named) once said: “Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it.” History has proven the Earl’s wisdom. Every single person who has had absolute power throughout the centuries has become corrupted by it.

The only one who can have absolute power and resist corruption is God. Because he is good, one-hundred percent purely and perfectly good, He is the only one not corrupted by absolute power. Instead, he uses his power to deliver us.

Some of us want deliverance on our own terms, without a Mighty God.

God’s people always are tempted to seek deliverance apart from God. Throughout Israel’s history, they sought deliverance through idols (who were small, made of wood or stone, and could be controlled by worship) and through alliances (who were fellow-humans and made of flesh and bone). And throughout Israel’s history, these idols and alliances failed them.

Deliverance could only come from a Mighty God.

But a Mighty God may exercise his might in unexpected ways. Our Mighty God was born in a manger, lived in poverty, depended on others, suffered, died and was buried. His friends mourned his death. And then he rose from the grave to a new life as a new dawn broke across our world.

When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate our Mighty God who became small and weak and flesh and bone in order to deliver us.

Who are you looking to for deliverance this holiday season?
