High Stakes Wisdom

Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm.
- Proverbs 13:20

The pursuit of wisdom comes with high stakes. Surround yourself with fools and you’ll suffer harm. This law, like the law of gravity, can break you if you ignore it.

Go into business with a fool and you’ll suffer for it. Marry a fool and it will be tough. Spend time listening to the gossip of fools and your relationships will fracture. Follow the health advice of fools and you’ll be taken advantage of. A companion of fools suffers harm.

Hearing this principle can spark a tremendous compassion in us … and compassion is so much better than fear. Knowing that a companion of fools suffers harm can equip us to be a positive influence in the lives of people around us.

We don’t just pursue wisdom for our sake. When we get wisdom, everyone around us gets blessed. When we cease to play the fool, everyone else benefits.

Range about in prayer today. Who among your friends or family or social circle do you see in need of wisdom? Intercede before the Lord on their behalf. Ask God to provide them with wise influence. Ask the Lord to protect them from foolishness. Thank God that he has invited all of us to walk with the wise, to walk with him.
