Good News for All of Us! Yes, Even You!

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people…a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke 2: 10-11)”

Sometimes I like to think “what if?” when reading passages from the Bible.  Imagine this:

The heavenly host has given great tidings of joy to the shepherds outside Bethlehem.  Amazed by the news, the shepherds decide to go into Bethlehem to experience the joy and wonder heralded by the angels.  As they’re gathering, an angel pokes their head back out from the clouds and reminds them:

“Hey! Just making sure you know this is a very big deal. I hope you have all your shopping done and decorations up. And of course, you’re going to cook a big meal afterwards, and everyone is invited, even Uncle Ed?  You’re also going to change before going, right? This is the birth of Jesus we’re talking about. I’m sure no one will say anything, but maybe consider a sweater or pair of slacks before showing up at the manger. Jesus is coming for everyone so let’s make sure we’re not embarrassing anyone, ok?”

How do you think the shepherds would have reacted? I know far fewer would have made the trip to see baby Jesus. Many would not have celebrated the joy of Jesus.  Some would’ve even withdrawn and felt bad about themselves, believing that Christmas isn’t for them.

I know this because many times over the years, and even a couple times this season I’ve listened to that “angel”.  I’ve felt holiday pressures that make me ask myself, “Am I doing this right? Am I good enough? Does this season really include me?”  This year I’m taking time to remove my doubts and reflect deeply about what the angel said:

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people…A Savior has been born to you!”

The words call me back to the focus of Christmas: The good news and great joy of Jesus. And yes, I’ll also celebrate with other holiday traditions and no, I can’t escape the holiday stress.  But nothing should discourage me from celebrating the joy of Jesus on Christmas.  I can respond to “Happy Holidays” with a “Merry Christmas”.  I belong at the Christmas church service.  The good news of Jesus is for all people, whether we’re with family or friends, church people or complete strangers.  Yes, even you!

Forget about the decorations. Don’t stress about the food.  Don’t worry about wearing the right shirt to church. Celebrate Jesus, for a Savior has been born to you!

Go to church! Share the unspeakable joy! Celebrate with others! The Christmas season is never going to be perfect, but our Lord Jesus is.  He is our joy, and he’s coming to be with you! Celebrate Jesus!
