God is able to bless you abundantly

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
- 2 Corinthians 9:8

On Sunday we talked about how creativity is a part of God’s very nature. He calls us to be creative because He’s creative and we’re made in his image. This week, we’ll be looking at God’s gift-giving generosity. Generosity is part of God’s very nature. He calls us to be generous because He’s generous and we’re made in his image.

Today’s passage notes that “God is able to bless you abundantly.” Let’s take that phrase by phrase.

“God is able” means that God has the capacity to be generous. He isn’t trapped by scarcity. His pockets aren’t empty. His storehouses are full. God doesn’t just want to be generous, he is able to be generous.

“God is able to bless you” means that God is able to give you the good things that you need, the things that will be a help and benefit to you. He doesn’t burden you with junk you don’t need. He doesn’t shower you with trinkets and baubles. His gifts are blessings. Blessed are the men and women who receive them.

“God is able to bless you abundantly.” Did you know that? He doesn’t just give you the minimum. When he gives gifts, he gives generously.

God doesn’t work his way down his list, rifling through his junk drawer to make sure everyone gets something. He is not stingy, miserly, or grudgingly giving people what they need. He is not angry. He is generous. He wants you “at all times” to have “all that you need” so that “you will abound in every good work.” His abundant generosity toward us spills out through us to bless the world around us.

Take some time today to reflect on your picture of God. When you imagine God, do you see him as generous? Why or why not?
