Everything in Christ

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
- Ephesians 1:3

What are you looking for? Where are you looking?

In today’s passage, Paul says that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. If you want mercy, you have it. If you want love, you have it. If you want grace or peace or justice or beauty or acceptance or holiness or goodness or gentleness or patience or courage … can you see where we’re going? Every spiritual blessing has already been given to you.

Don’t dig through your purse or bag or inbox or junk mail pile looking for them. You didn’t misplace whatever it is you’re looking for and you didn’t accidentally put it in the refrigerator behind the milk. (Unless what you’re looking for is your car keys, in which case, please check the refrigerator.)

If instead you’re looking for one or all of these spiritual blessings that Paul said we’ve already been given you need to look where he told us to look. Can you see it in today’s passage?

“In the heavenly realms” … stay with us. The spiritual blessings we’re all longing for are safe. They’re in a place where nothing will corrupt them and they’ll never be misplaced. For Paul “the heavenly realms” weren’t a place way up in the sky. Heaven and earth co-exist. Heaven is present to us right now and right here. You have access to the heavenly realms and every spiritual blessing you need right now, right here.

“In Christ” … our connection with the heavenly realms can be difficult, tenuous, and confusing. We can look at ourselves and say that we don’t deserve these blessings. We can despair of ever becoming the love-filled, patient, courageous, just people we wish we could become. But when we look to Christ we have hope.

Jesus gives us access to every spiritual blessing. He pays our ticket and give us the tour. He holds the door open to us. He fills our shopping cart. He walks us down the aisle and holds our hand. He shares with us everything he has. And his “everything” thing includes everything.

What spiritual blessings are you longing for right now? Ask God to help you access them in Christ. Ask him to show you the way.
