Enjoy the Work

And God saw that it was good.
- from Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31

During this holiday season, God invites us to be creative and to delight in our creativity.

For some of us, this will mean creating delightful experiences for our families and friends. For others, we’ll create meaningful gifts on a tight budget. Some will create delicious meals. Others will create a festive atmosphere with lights and garland and elves on shelves.

In God’s great creative work in Genesis 1, he pauses over and over again to delight in the world that he’s creating. He isn’t just evaluating his work, he’s enjoying it.

Tomorrow, we’ll explore how it is that God is the source of our creativity. Today, we just want to pause and study his example. Throughout Genesis 1, God models a Creator who creates out of love and joy and contentment. The work of creation gives him pleasure. And we were made in his image.

Our creative work should produce pleasure and joy in us. We are sub-creators, festooning our small corners of the world with as much beauty and joy as we can manage. And over all of this, God bellows his “It is good. It is good. It is very good.”

Ask yourself today: “How am I going to hang beauty and joy in this corner of God’s world this season?”
