Chatham Church History 101

Don’t begin by traveling to some far-off place to convert unbelievers. And don’t try to be dramatic by tackling some public enemy. Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood. Tell them that the kingdom is here. Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead. Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons. You have been treated generously, so live generously. (Matthew 10:5-8 MSG).

The year was 2007. A group of people from Chapel Hill Bible Church gathered at a local elementary school for church. The purpose? Planting a church in the county that they already lived in, and in which they could more easily invite their neighbors.

They met at the elementary school until they outgrew that space, and then a partnership with Woods Charter school began. (High fives to everyone who helped set up and tear down all those years meeting at both schools!) More folks came, and in 2017 a second campus was launched in Pittsboro, so Chatham Church could be accessible to even more neighbors in the county. In 2021 a new building was constructed and became the permanent home of our North Chatham campus.

In Matthew 10 Jesus sends out his disciples to tell those closest to them the kingdom is here. He didn’t send them to far off lands or across oceans—He sent them to the people in the neighborhoods where they were. You have been treated generously, so live generously. Which I think loosely translates as, “Y’all have heard the Good News and it’s changed your lives. It’s set you free–now go and share it!”

He sends us to our neighborhoods, too, and from the very beginning Chatham Community Church has been outwardly focused. It’s baked right into our name! “Connecting people to God, to each other, and engaging our world for good,” is our mission statement, and decisions have consistently been made along the way to ensure that remains the main focus.

Twice a year we go out into the community to do service projects in lieu of our regular services. We host a school supplies drive for local schools each August, a coat drive for local kids each winter, and for the first time this year we’re hosting a fall festival in partnership with some local non-profits. We love Chatham county, and we love to show it.

We have been treated generously, so we live generously!

If you’re new here–welcome! We’ve been expecting you, and we’re so glad you’re here. If you’ve been with us for a while–thanks for all the ways you make us great and for being a big part of how we are able to bless our community. Looking for a way you can help?
