An Extraordinary Resolution to Live in Love

4

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality (Romans 12:9-13 ESV).

When we enter a new year, everyone is expected to have some sort of resolution, a new way to live in the new year. Many people choose to eat healthier or exercise more. As we are approaching the end of the first month of 2023, how are those resolutions doing? The majority of people have already let go of their new ways of living (if that isn’t you, give yourself a round of applause!).

But… what if there was a way of living that we should strive to pick up at any time in the year, or even in our lives? A way of living that affected those around us for the better?

The Apostle Paul has a command for us in this week’s passage. He says we can start this new living by “letting love be genuine” (vs. 9). We’ve talked about the importance of living supernaturally, what it means to live so, etc. Here, Paul gives us the key to how to live our day-to-day lives supernaturally: live in love!

The verses above are examples of how we can do that. You can hold fast to what is good or be in constant prayer or seek to show hospitality. These things are all so different from your ordinary resolution because they take the “me” out of resolution. These practices of love benefit those around you, while at the same time giving you the satisfaction of doing something that is right and good.

Even better, if you’re already doing these things, you’re likely living pretty supernaturally (even if you don’t know it!)!

After wrapping up this month’s sermon series, think about whether or not you are living supernaturally. Search for a place to volunteer (church is a great one!) or simply reach out to an old friend and ask how they are doing. If you are living supernaturally, give a friend a hand of help with their supernatural journey!

Thank you all so much for your comments of encouragement!
I hadn’t thought about how inward focused resolutions can become. it reminds me of the preflight announcement about adults, needing to put their own oxygen mask on first before helping children with theirs. So yes, it’s important that I get my oxygen so that I don’t pass out but it would be wrong for me to just sit back and relax at that point, I now need to move beyond me to those around me, helping them.
This was such a helpful devotional today, Bella. I had never thought of how resolutions tend to be all about me. That verse truly nails it: "Outdo one another in showing honor." Thank you.
I loved your devo today. I never thought about living in love as supernaturally living, but it surely is. Thanks for the insight.
