A “Useless” Ball of Yarn

“The Lord possessed me [Wisdom] at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world” (Proverbs 8:22-26 ESV).

The word “crochet” often leads people to think of some old-lady-sitting-by-her-fireplace hobby. However, you can make so many more things than just doilies and blankets. I love to crochet and make stuffed animals, bags, baby outfits, and small baskets. There is something so captivating about how you can take a seemingly useless ball of yarn and turn it into something creative and functional.

In that way, crochet relates to our lives. I’m sure we all have wondered what exactly is the purpose/goal of our lives - just like that strange, seemingly useless ball of yarn. What if the key to seeing purpose is using God’s gift of wisdom in our lives?

We see in the passage that wisdom is a gift from God, one that has been around since the beginning of time. Wisdom was even used to be creative in making mountains, fields, dust, and everything else in existence (vs. 26).

So God gave us this gift of wisdom, and we can choose whether or not to accept it. When we reject this gift, we will see little purpose and little creativity. But, if we choose to accept the gift of wisdom, we will be wise enough to be able to turn “uselessness” into something creative and beautiful.

Remember how I stated that crochet may be similar to our lives? Well, here’s how: before we accept the gift of wisdom and use it, our lives - workplace, home life, relationships, etc. - may look unnecessary, strange, and a little pointless, like a ball of yarn. When we begin to act out the wisdom that has been given to us, we will be able to create a masterpiece within our lives, one that is structured on wisdom!

How can you use wisdom to be creative this week? Is there anywhere in your life that could use a little bit of wisdom to be creative, and beautifully weave together the yarn of your life?
