The Table for Us

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
- from Psalm 23:5

When the planning team for 24-Hour Prayer got together to study Psalm 23, this line jumped out to us. David writes about how the Lord prepares a table for him in the presence of his enemies. And we remember how the Lord did the same for us.

Throughout Christian history, followers of Jesus have celebrated something called Communion or The Lord's Supper or just The Table. Whenever we eat the bread and drink from the cup, we remind ourselves of the Lord's love for us, that he was willing to die for us.

On the night he was betrayed, the Lord's Table was prepared in the presence of enemies. Judas sat there. The religious leaders and government officials who would soon arrest and crucify Jesus, they were nearby. The powers of this dark world watched as Jesus and his disciples ate the Last Supper together.

We are called to be God's people who will celebrate and feast and remember the Lord even in the face of great opposition. The table he prepares for us isn't a table in a galaxy far, far away. The table is right here in the right now right before our very eyes. We don't need to get to a safer place before we pause and remember and enjoy Jesus.

What would it look like for you to remember and enjoy Jesus today?
