The song of a grateful heart

My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.
- from Luke 1:46-48

Mary begins her song with a grateful heart. She has received an incredible privilege from God and she knows it. She doesn’t brag or boast about how great or magnificent she must be. She doesn’t swagger.

She had lived a quiet life in a quiet town. Nothing in her history or life experience led her to believe that she would one day be the mother to the King of Kings. She calls herself a “servant” and notes that her life is a “humble” one.

Many of us lead wonderful, happy, yet humble lives. We don’t make the news. Yet God can show up in our lives in miraculous ways as well. He can give us spectacular freedom, extraordinary healing, and a nearly unimaginable power to love and forgive.

Let’s respond like Mary when God includes us in his big work and when he works in our lives in miraculous ways. Rejoicing sparked by gratitude does something powerful in our souls. The life of God fills us when we praise him.

Will you take a moment today to praise God and give him thanks for the ways he’s worked in your life?
