The Prepositions of Salvation

He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
    in the house of his servant David
salvation from our enemies

    and from the hand of all who hate us …
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins …
- from Luke 1:69-77

Three times salvation rings out in today’s passage: salvation for us, salvation from our enemies, and salvation through the forgiveness of sins. Don’t miss the full picture of the salvation that God has for us in Jesus Christ!

Salvation for us
Salvation isn’t just applied on a cosmic scale. God’s work connects with us as individuals and with our community. Salvation plays out in our lives as we live together. God’s salvation is for you and for me, for us. Salvation is a gift with your name on it.

Salvation from our enemies
Salvation isn’t just a spiritual switch-flipping that gets you into heaven when you die. God’s work plays out in the here-and-now. He saves us from sin, addiction, bullies, fear, shame, anxiety, and death. All of the enemies who array themselves against our joy find in our Lord a fierce and mighty opponent. Salvation is a gift that you’ve been searching for your whole life.

Salvation through the forgiveness of sins
Salvation deals with the root of our problems. We’re have distanced ourselves from God and from healthy community, have left much good undone in our selfish pursuit of comfort and success, and desperately need change (but can’t seem to generate it on our own). The salvation God brings our way in Jesus Christ touches the central, broken fault-line in our souls and restores us. Salvation is a gift that you desperately need.

Don’t miss out on the salvation God offers you. Receive it every day. Don’t let it grow dusty on some back shelf in your heart. Take it out and polish it. Give thanks for it. Cling to it and celebrate it today.
