The Generous Maker

1

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our own image....” In the image of God he created them, male and female he created them…and it was very good.
-from Genesis 1

Yesterday we kicked off our look at God’s generosity with the wonder of the goodness of creation. Today we come to the pinnacle of creation: men and women, made in God’s image.

As beautiful and sophisticated as ecosystems and squid are, human beings are the final piece of the creation story. There are literally millions of physiological and intellectual processes that are in play to get you to the point where you’re reading this devotional.

Without you being aware of it, your heart is beating is pumping blood to your eyes to allow them to operate a complex system of lenses, rods and cones to allow you to see. Your brain is taking in random markings called letters and decoding them so you can do this wondrous exercise called reading.

In that same brain, you are not only seeing the words but interpreting them, understanding them, organizing them into categories and images so that you might comprehend what is being communicated.

All the while, muscles in your back work together with your bones to help you to sit upright. You’re blinking to keep your eyes at the appropriate moisture level and not even noticing it.

This would be too much to fully take in if we were all mass-produced and exactly the same. But add to that the near-infinite combinations of DNA that generate personality and temperament and eye color and skin pigmentation and innate skills and abilities. There are no carbon-copies of human beings anywhere (not even among twins!).

You are uniquely and brilliantly designed by a generous God who has stamped you with his image.

Take a moment to thank God for his generosity in how he made you.

And as if that's not enough, the "in His image" part just blows my mind!
