The Difference Unity Makes

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
- Psalm 133:1

Can you imagine it? God’s people living together in unity.

We experience division and divisiveness all around us. We live in an age of market segmentation and preach-to-the-base strategy. Social, political, economic and religious forces attempt to separate us in order to maximize their use of us.

But what if we were united?

Our unity would force us to deal with our junk. We would need to forgive and seek reconciliation. We would need to search our hearts and make apologies. We would need to listen, to really listen. We would sacrifice for each other because we would feel in our bones that we can only thrive when we all thrive.

As people of peace, our communities would be places of peace where our exhausted neighbors can go to find refreshing for their souls. We would be trustworthy and faithful, refusing to betray each other. The embers of salvation that God has placed in each and every one of his people would blaze brightly in the darkness as we gather together in unity, a warm beacon in a cold world.

Perhaps our unity would continue Jesus’ work to tear down the walls of hostility between corners of our community. United to each other, despite our differences, our very existence would be a challenge to the narratives of division fill our cultural atmosphere.

God’s people were always meant to live together in blessed unity. Race, class, gender, politics, zip code … none of these will ultimately keep God’s people divided in the kingdom that Jesus is bringing into existence through our lives in Chatham County for the world.

This week, we want to invite you to come to our Sunday worship prepared for something a little different.

Pastor Alex will be joined by Rev. Paul McAllister for an inter-racial discussion about unity from Psalm 133. We’re hoping to have an honest dialogue about what unity is, what it’s not, why it matters so much to God, why it’s so hard to achieve, and what it takes to cultivate the good and pleasant unity that is described in the Scriptures.

Spend just a moment now praying about what unity might look like as a church here in Chatham County. Pray for God to give us clear guidance and direction together. Pray that we might be open to doing the work it might take to get us there.
