The Desires of Your Heart

You have granted him his heart’s desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips.
- Psalm 21:2

On Sunday, we talked a little bit about how God doesn’t always grant our desires. This was true for David and it’s true to our experience as well.

But in today’s passage, God has given David his heart’s desire. And David’s thrilled. Should we expect this for ourselves?

We’re hesitant to make promises that God doesn’t make. Clearly, there will be times when he grants our hearts desire and times when he doesn’t. One way that Christians have understood how God’s at work around the desires of our hearts is to say that God’s at work in the planting as well as the granting of our desires.

The work of the Spirit in us involves God shaping, transforming, correcting and enlarging our desires. He plants fresh, new, bigger, better desires inside of us as we walk with him.

But here’s the good news: God’s not waiting for our desires to be perfect before he grants them. His work of shaping and purifying our desires is happening even while he delights to hear the (mixed) desires of our imperfect hearts and (very often) grants those requests.

Tell God the desires of your heart today. Let’s see what he does.
