The Creator of Heaven and Earth

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

- Genesis 1:1

I believe in God the Father, almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

- from The Apostles’ Creed

God created the heavens and the earth. He made it all and he owns it all. From top to bottom, it’s his.

We are his stewards, entrusted (to his delight) with responsibility to care for the heavens and the earth and everything thing in them. Our human creativity reflects God’s own generous, creative nature.

We have been given authority and will be held accountable. That’s how it goes with stewards. God has the power to judge and the power to appoint stewards. He shares his work in the heavens and the earth with us. Whether we’re building houses or companies, managing projects or gardens, changing diapers or political systems … we remain merely stewards in the world that is owned by God.

This truth is a re-centering truth. God is not at the margins of his own creation. He’s at the center. When we forget that God is at the center of creation, everything gets out-of-whack. We overestimate our importance. We underestimate his level of engagement. We become arrogant and prideful or fall into hopelessness and despair.

This first article of the Apostles’ Creed reminds us that the God who is Father to us and mighty for us is also the creator of us all. This shapes the way we treat each other and the environment. This bestows dignity on everyone we see, no matter how small they might be.

Reflect on God’s ownership of creation today. Give him thanks for the wonderful people and things he has made.
