The Creative Spirit

The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

- Luke 1:35

"... our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit ... I believe in the Holy Spirit"

- from The Apostles' Creed

By the time the Creed gets to the assertion "I believe in the Holy Spirit," we've already met the Spirit. In the Christmas story, we read that Jesus was  conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary ... allowing him to be both fully God and fully human.

Throughout the Bible, the Holy Spirit is involved in moments like these. Conception. Creation. Re-creation. He takes the eternal Word of God, sent by the Father and wraps him in human flesh. As we mentioned yesterday, the Holy Spirit directly engaged in God's creative "In the beginning" work. In our own lives, the Holy Spirit is involved in our ongoing transformation, as God's good word spoken over us takes root in our hearts and bears fruit in our lives.

The Holy Spirit takes the words and promises of God and gives them flesh, making them earthly and substantitive. We rely on the Spirit's work to bring God's word into God's world.

Where do you need to experience the Spirit's work of creation and re-creation in your own life and relationships?
