Search in progress

The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

We invite you to join the search that’s already in progress.

Jesus came to earth on a rescue mission. Selfishness, sin and the power of evil trapped humanity and separated us from the healthy relationships with God and each other that we were always meant to have. Isolated people responded to Jesus and flocked to him. But not everyone felt comfortable in this new community Jesus created.

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law felt uncomfortable when they saw the warm welcome Jesus gave “sinners.” They crossed their arms and muttered. And, as a result, they started to miss out on the great life that Jesus had to offer.

Jesus told them a series of parables to open their eyes to what they were doing.

The last parable in the series ends with an older brother refusing to join a party that was breaking out in the house. His stubbornness and self-righteous were causing him to miss out. His father comes to him and pleads with him to go in. And that’s exactly what Jesus did too.

Over the last several weeks, we’ve been viewing a search in progress. As Jesus piled up parable after parable, he pleaded with the Pharisees and teachers of the law to join the party. “Don’t stand out in the field,” say the parables, “don’t let God’s generosity distract you from the good life he has for you.”

Don’t be mistaken. Jesus welcomes everyone. Jesus reaches out to everyone. His welcome isn’t just for “sinners.” He doesn’t just take initiative with those who are irreligious. His compassion and love extend even to those of us who cross our arms and mutter in response to his generosity.

Take a moment today to receive Jesus’ warm welcome. He loves you and wants you to join the great celebration that’s breaking out all over the world as lost sons and daughters come home to God. Will you receive his invitation today? Will you join his rejoicing?
