Prince of Peace

“Prince of Peace …”

- from Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah ends his list of titles – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father – with one to sum them all up: Prince of Peace.

The notion of “peace” was well-developed in the language of God’s people. They called it “shalom.” Shalom was not just absence of conflict. It was holistic and covered geopolitical, relational and economic realms. Shalom had to do with the fullness of well-being, with a rightly-ordered life and kingdom.

Responsibility for restoring and maintaining order fell to everyone, but it was especially the job description for rulers and leaders.

Some leaders, like King David, knew how to lead in times of war but stumbled when conflict ceased. Others, like Moses, brought deliverance, but lost their way on the next steps. Still others, like King Solomon, experienced great prosperity but didn’t order their lives or kingdoms.

All of us who’ve led in life know leadership can be hard work. And many of us have seen leaders get in over their heads.

Isaiah looked forward to a leader who would never be in over his head, who wouldn't miss opportunities or get lost or stumble. The Prince of Peace will keep working the peace out, “establishing and upholding it
 with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever” (Is. 9:7).

Look around you. Where do you see the need for God to bring peace? Will you ask him to establish his peace in the places you’ve identified?
