Part of Something Epic

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
- Ephesians 3:20-21
 
If you’re able to, read today’s text out loud. This is the end of Paul’s prayer right here in the middle of Ephesians. He gets caught up in the joy of praying for them and soars to this roaring crescendo. He blesses his readers with a powerful benediction before turning to engage other conversations.
 
Enter into this passage imaginatively.
 
Picture your heavenly Father sitting in a chair and smiling at you. He’s not embarrassed as Paul talks about how great he is and how willing he is to bless us. It’s all true.
 
Call to mind some of the things you have asked God for or imagined he might do for you. Pile them up in front of you. Listen to Paul’s words that God is able to do immeasurably more than all of this. Your imagination is not greater than God’s generosity.
 
Feel the weight drop from your shoulders as it sinks in that you no longer have to moderate your requests to God. You don’t have to spot him a couple of points on the curve. You don’t have to ratchet down your requests into the realm of what’s possible. What’s possible is beyond your imagination.
 
Can you feel his power at work within you? He’s giving you a supernatural ability to love, to endure, to forgive, to care, to listen, to speak with wisdom. And he’s smiling. He’s delighted with you.
 
All across the cosmos watching eyes and listening ears bend to see what God is doing in us through Jesus Christ. Ripples of spontaneous praise break out throughout the universe at angels and demons catch wind of God’s glorious work.
 
And it’s never going to end. We didn’t start it. We can’t derail it. Our lives and worship and faithfulness all contribute meaningfully to it. And it will never end. It goes on and on and on and on and on without ceasing, without break, and without end.
 
We’re part of something epic. Amen?
