Offer what you have

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk.
- from Acts 3:6-8

Peter offered what he had, not what he didn’t have. He didn’t have silver or gold. He’d already given that away (see Acts 2). But just because he didn’t have money doesn’t mean he didn’t have anything to offer.

It feels great to be able to offer someone silver or gold (or greenbacks and gift cards). We love the blessed feeling that comes with being generous. But if we think of generosity merely as a financial transaction, we miss out on God’s bigger work.

What Peter (and God through Peter) gave to the lame man was far better than any amount of silver or gold. Praise be to God for this unexpected gift! Peter was willing to offer what he had to this man who needed help, and it was more than he knew he could possibly ask for.

You may not have two nickels to rub together, but – good news! – God has given you gifts that are worth more than silver or gold. You may have a swimming pool full of silver or gold at home, but you have gifts beyond your wealth.

Peter knew what he didn’t have to offer the lame man and he knew what he did have to offer the lame man. Take stock.

What do you have to offer the people around you? What do you have to offer your church community? What good, non-financial gifts has God entrusted to you? What would it look like for you to put them to work?
