Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8: 35, 37).
Back in college days, my friends and I would encourage each other by saying, “You are more than a conqueror.” At that time, I did believe and trust God, but my faith was still young. I had not yet walked through the kinds of hardship that would deepen those words. The words of Romans 8:37 mean a little more to me each time I go through hardship because I have more history with God. The more I’ve experienced his faithfulness and seen how he carried me through tough times, the stronger my faith has become.
When Paul wrote that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, he was talking about trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and even the sword. These were not small struggles. Yet Paul said that even in these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. The phrase “more than conquerors” translates from the Greek word hypernikōmen. It carries the idea of an overwhelming or surpassing victory, even in the midst of suffering.
Paul reminds us that God's truth can cut through the noise. We can face real adversity with the assurance that nothing will ever separate us from the love of God.
The noise in your head might say, “I can't handle this hardship.”
God's truth says, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” This hardship might hurt me, change me, or leave scars, but it cannot separate me from Christ or have the final word.
The noise in your head might say, “What if I lose what I love?”
God's truth says that neither death nor life nor anything else in creation can separate us from God's love. The things I fear losing are real and precious, but even loss cannot take Christ from me.
The noise in your head might say, “What if something terrible happens next?”
God's truth says that neither “things present” nor “things to come” can separate us from His love. I don't know what tomorrow contains, but nothing tomorrow contains can separate me from God's love.
The more often I have seen Him carry me through hardship, the more deeply I have learned to trust Him with the next one. So, I want to encourage you today with the same words my friends and I shared with each other years ago: “You are more than a conqueror.” Whatever you are facing, God's truth is greater than the noise of fear. Your hardship may be painful, and it may not end the way you hope, but it cannot separate you from the love of Christ.
What fear has been making the most noise in your mind lately? Write it down, then read Romans 8:35–39 and choose one truth from the passage to return to each time that fear gets loud.
