Jesus Can Do the Impossible!

“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.  Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again” (John 11:21-23).

At some point in our lives, we have all faced or will face an impossible situation. When we are in the midst of it, we often feel that all hope seems lost, and it can be hard to imagine how God could fix it.

In this passage, Martha is right in the middle of one, but has a surprising kind of faith in the midst of it. Even though Martha had sent word to Jesus, the Healer, that her brother Lazarus was sick, Jesus did not come in time to heal him. By the time Jesus was near, Lazarus was already in the grave for four days.

When Martha heard Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him. Even in her sorrow, she believed in Jesus and His power. Martha told Him she knew He could have healed Lazarus if he had been there.  However, she didn’t get angry with Him or blame him. Instead, she still believed He could do a miracle. She had faith that Jesus could do the impossible, and Jesus did. He raised Lazarus from the grave.

I’ve seen God resurrect impossible situations in my life too. He used my cancer to not only reconcile my relationship with my dad but also to give me a deeper, more loving relationship with my husband.

Later, when I wasn’t able to work full-time anymore due to health issues, I felt many of the dreams for the future I had planned and worked for fall apart. I remember praying and asking God to help me. There were certain desires that God had placed in my heart, but I couldn’t find a way to achieve any of them. I just prayed with open hands. God, you know my desires. My situation feels impossible, and I don’t know how to make it better. I just prayed that he would come and resurrect my situation.  It took a few years, but God provided a way to fill every need on my prayer list.  My eyes are filled with tears just thinking about it.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life…” (John 11:25).  We don’t have to lose hope, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart, dying, even dead. We can have faith like Martha, and trust that Jesus can do the impossible.

If you or someone you know is in a seemingly impossible situation like Martha was, then do what she did. Submit your request to Jesus. If he doesn’t answer the way that you hoped, go to Him and share your feelings and desires. Ask him to resurrect your situation in the way that only He knows how.  If we place our hope in God, who raises the dead, then we allow God to bring new life where there is no life, even if that new life is… new, unexpected, or surprising. Trust in Him as you wait with expectation because He will do it.
