Inevitable Christmas

So the Lord God said to the serpent …
And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
    and you will strike his heel.”

- Genesis 3:15

No Christmas, no Easter. No Christmas, no salvation or redemption or reconciliation. No Christmas, no Christ.

Christmas exists within an epic story, a large framework, a huge canvas. The true myths of Genesis point into a foggy future. Ancient readers of this text wouldn’t have pictured a baby in a manger or a Messiah on a cross. And that’s no failing on their part.

God’s eagerness to get involved, his willingness to save causes light to shine through the cracks in history. Little asides and phrases like these fill the scriptures. As you grow to know Jesus, you’ll recognize them.

Christmas comes every year. In a way, Christmas feels inevitable. As we spiral out and look at history, that feeling persists. Knowing God the way we do now, it’s inevitable that the Fall would be followed by a Savior, that our bondage would end when the Liberator arrives, that the Healer would bind our wounds even if it required him to be wounded himself.

Take some time today to listen to some Christmas worship music and reflect on what Christmas tells us about God and his intentions for us.
