In Search of Jesus

2

Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
- John 6:24

So far in John 6, Jesus has fed the crowd, produced literally tons of leftovers, created an enthusiastic response from the crowd and then left them. What would you do at this point if you were part of the crowd?

In just a few verses, we’ll see that the crowd finds Jesus, hears a challenging teaching from him and then abandons him. That will not be their best day.

But before we’re too tough on this fickle crowd, we see something beautiful in them. They go in search of Jesus.

Many of us have also done this: searched for Jesus.

We have encounters with God that are meaningful to us, but then wake up one day and something just seems to be missing. We look around and realize that we can’t find Jesus anymore.

Maybe we’ve stopped reading Scripture. Maybe we’ve drifted out of the habit of participating in church-life. Maybe our prayers have slipped into rote rhythms that ring hollow. What we do in these moments matters tremendously.

Will we go in search of Jesus? Or will we run off to look for life elsewhere?

What does it look like for you to go in search for Jesus? He’s neither tame, boring nor still. To be with him and follow him requires a commitment to pay attention to him. How do you plan to do that today?

I use my imagination to be with him. I gaze at the sky and ocean and picture him with me. I read my devotionals and listen to Hillsong which is heaven on earth for me. I pray for others and ask him to get me thru the day. I need quiet time for this all.
