Grumbling and Arguing

"Do everything without grumbling or arguing ..."

- Philippians 2:14

After an intense conversation about our work and God's work, Paul turns his attention to our attitudes and our words.

Grumbling and arguing reveal what's really going on inside of us. They're red flags, warning lights. They reveal that our process of working out our salvation is going astray. Something has hijacked our working our of our salvation.

Here are four things we've identified that hijack our working out our salvation and produce grumbling and arguing:

  • Prioritizing being precise over being loving
  • Refusing to reconcile with people who've wronged us
  • Making ourselves the center of God's big story
  • Attempting to withold corners of our lives from God's saving work

Think about reasons you grumble and argue.

How do grumbling and arguing get in the way of God's work in your life?

What can you replace grumbling and arguing with in your life?

I agree too, Jan. Gratitude really does a number on grumbling and arguing. It shifts something in our hearts.

Prayer does this for me too. When I'm praying for people, my attitude toward them changes. As Bonhoeffer said: "I can no longer condemn or hate a brother for whom I pray, no matter how much trouble he causes me."

Grumbling and arguing spring from self-pity and the best cure for it I have found is gratitude. Gratitude also connects me directly to God and strengthens me to realize my joy is not based on momentary circumstances!

Amen....once again, it all comes back to losing self, just as Jesus said....it really is that simple....lose self, gain Christ, problems solved.

All praise and glory to the One who makes all things possible, for those who choose to make their life all about Him!!
