God with us

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- Acts 2:4

Today’s passage talks about a moment that – in a way – echoes Christmas. God becomes present with humanity in a powerful new way. He delivers on his promises. He is with us.

Were we to sing of this moment, we might use a tune like “Come, Thou Long Expected Holy Spirit.” For generations the faithful people of God watched and waited for God’s Spirit to be poured out on common people. They watched and waited but didn’t see it until this moment. God faithfully delivered on his promises, as he always does.

As we lean into and engage with God’s mission, his great global restoration project, we need him to be present with us.

When we read about the Holy Spirit filling the followers of Jesus, we catch a glimpse of God’s desire to be really and truly present with us. He doesn’t want to just be near us or in our proximity; he wants to dwell within us.

Think through your day today. Where are you going? God will be with you. What will you be doing? God will be with you? To whom will you speak? God will be with you.

What will be different today because God is with you?
