“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).
Next June, I’m moving back to South Korea, and almost everything familiar about my daily life will change. My children will remain in the United States, while I will join my husband in Korea. There are things that excite me, but also things that worry me. Will my children be okay? Will I be happy? Will I be lonely? Sometimes I just want reassurance that everything will be okay.
Years ago, when I moved from South Korea to the United States, I was scared too. I was stepping into a future I couldn’t see, and I had no idea what this new chapter would hold. Yet looking back, I see so many blessings God gave me here: friendships, ministry, and a life I have loved so much that now it is difficult to leave. I couldn’t see the whole story then, but God could.
We live inside time, but God rules over it. We can see yesterday and today, but we cannot see tomorrow. God sees the entire story.
The first readers of Revelation couldn't see what was coming either. They knew suffering, social pressure, opposition, and the possibility of greater persecution. What does God tell frightened and uncertain people? He doesn't tell them exactly what will happen. Instead, He tells them who He is: the One “who is, and who was, and who is to come.”
God doesn't give me certainty about my circumstances. He gives me certainty about Himself.
I don't have to know what is coming because I know the God who is already Lord over it.
The God who holds my future is also the God who loves me. The most powerful One in the universe cares about me. What feels enormous and heavy to me is not too heavy for Him. I am in His hands.
And this gives me something to delight in.
He is the Alpha and Omega.
He is eternal.
He is sovereign.
He is Almighty.
He is faithful.
He loves us.
He redeemed us.
He conquered death.
He is coming again.
And this is the God who holds my future.
During some of the hardest seasons of my life, I picked up my guitar and worshiped. My circumstances hadn't changed, but in God's presence, my perspective did. I found peace.
Maybe you are facing an unknown future too. It could be your health, children, finances, marriage, or work. You may not know what tomorrow holds, but God is bigger than time. He is Lord over the future you cannot see. You can find peace and joy in the One who holds tomorrow.
“To him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.”
What unknown future are you carrying today? Turn your worry into worship by spending a few minutes in God’s presence, focusing on who He is rather than what might happen, and resting in the peace of the One who holds your future.
