Give us today our daily bread

"Give us today our daily bread."

- Matthew 6:11

At the center of the prayer Jesus taught his followers to pray, we hear this phrase: give us today our daily bread. We’re going to pray this together today.

We pray for daily bread because God doesn’t just care about our souls but he also cares about our survival. Our Father in heaven cares about our well-being. He provides. And he wants us to ask him for help.

What things threaten your physical, emotional and/or spiritual survival today? Ask away.

We can’t live without food. God knows this—he made us this way. We are not self-sufficient and were never meant to be. Despite the lies we tell ourselves, we are not God’s equals, though we are much loved by him. He alone is holy and his name alone is hallowed. And he knows exactly what we need to survive. Yet he invites us to ask.

What do you know he already knows you need? Ask away.

We live in a world that is desperately damaged. We can’t save it or fix it on our own. Just as our stomachs groan with hunger, our hearts cry out for healing and justice and redemption, for God’s kingdom and rule to arrive here on earth. We hunger for this even as we hunger for food. And he teaches us to ask.

What needs do you see in our community and in the world today? Ask away.

Those suffering homelessness, those in need of food and shelter...when I was in Kansas freezing at 20 degrees, shivering, my heart ached for those who have no place to go. I sometimes worry about the future when I will not have enough...so it is hard to ask when I see so much suffering around.

God, please bring Pharaoh's Daughter into physical fruition!! Bring the donors, being the babies, bring the moms! You see the hurt and damage against these children... put your foot down and say "Enough!" Thank You.
