Give thanks today

The master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
- from John 2:9-10

As Vanessa Williams sang a long time ago: “Just when I thought a chance had passed, you went and saved the best for last.” And that’s just what Jesus did.

The water he turned into wine turned out to be extraordinary wine. This stuff that Jesus made was the stuff off the top shelf: lavish, generous, remarkable. The wedding guests would be talking about this surprise for a long time. What a treat!

As you feast and give thanks today, keep this moment in mind.

In Jesus’ story, the party doesn’t end when the wine runs out. The celebration doesn’t kick along on life-support until the tryptophan and increased blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract renders us unconscious on the couch. There’s another act in Jesus’ story.

In fact, it’s just getting started.

Give thanks today to the God of second chances
Give thanks today for the God who joins the dances
Give thanks with a glad heart
Give thanks for all you have
Give thanks for all you love
Give thanks to the One who saved his Best
Until came the time to do his Best
To share his wine and save us all
