Building Trust on Trust
1Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
- Proverbs 3:5-6
At its heart, trust is all about the heart. Trusting the Lord requires us to open our hearts to him. In trust, we take the risk to let him into our lives. We give up control. And that ain’t easy.
Healthy relationships require trust. We have to trust people to have our best interests in mind. We have to trust people to keep our secrets. We have to trust people to give us the space we need to be healthy and whole. And if we can’t find that trust, we struggle to have meaningful relationships.
Our relationship with the Lord can create space for us to have other relationships. In Jesus we have someone who always, always, always has our best interest in mind. He keeps our secrets. He shows us not only kindness and patience. As we learn to trust him, we develop our trust muscles. And as we grow stronger, we can trust and trust and trust.
