Available to God

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.”

- Exodus 3:4

We don’t know what God’s particular calling for you life might be. Maybe you’ve already discovered it. But we do know that God’s speaking your name right now.

Are you available to him?

Moses’ story throughout this section is a story of a man struggling to submit control to God. In small groups this week, we’re going to look at Moses’ litany of objections to God’s call on his life. We’ll see Moses protest and God push back.

But God can have this back-and-forth with Moses (the man who is eventually called “God’s friend) because Moses has made himself available. Moses is willing to engage with God and listen to him: “Here I am.”

Moses is willing to engage with God at a personal level. He doesn’t outsource his engagement with God to an intermediary (a pastor or a priest). He doesn’t talk with God to appease his parents or his spouse or because he wants his kids to get exposed to good moral teaching. He is willing to hear God call his specific name – “Moses, Moses” – and to respond personally – “Here I am.”

This “Here I am” puts us in a posture of openness, submission, and willingness before the Lord to hear what he might say to us. “Here I am” puts before a generous, loving, un-tamed God to hear what he might say to us.

Take a few moments today to say to God: “Here I am.” Tell God that you’re available if he wants to speak to you or to use you to love and care for someone in need. Who knows what God will do with you today?
