...and we're back!

Exodus 1:8-16

Welcome back to Connect Devotional, a daily reflection on the current sermon theme and Scripture passage for Chatham Community Church.  We enjoyed a writing break over the summer, but are now ready to get back to it – hope you’re ready to join us day by day!

Before we jump into the passage for the week, I’d like to issue a wide-open invitation to any and all potential writers out there: you, too, can be part of the CD writing team!  Not one of the current team had ever done this kind of writing before we began this CD work.  Whatever prerequisites or qualifications you suspect are required, we didn’t have ‘em! None of us considered ourselves “experienced writers.”  None had any kind of advanced education in writing, or theology, or Biblical studies.

What goes into CD writing are things like a love of Scripture … of learning to communicate well in writing … a desire to help friends in Chatham Church and beyond listen attentively to God’s Word and to thereby grow as followers of Jesus … some creative playfulness … willingness to take some risks to grow and develop as a communicator … enjoyment in telling and hearing stories, from Scripture and from our own lives … and a good dose of fun!

If any of that sounds intriguing, we would love (or, as Pastor Alex says, love-love-love) to hear from you!  You could be an occasional writer, contributing from time to time, or a regular, writing one devotional each week.  If you have questions, would like to discuss this further, please contact Jessica Waldstein (jessica.waldstein@chathamchurch.org) or Brian Emmet (briemmet@aol.com).

Our Soar! sermon series is already underway.  God created his people to soar, but life has all kinds of ways of clipping our wings … and at times it is we ourselves doing the clipping!  This week, we’re in Exodus 17.  God has delivered his people from slavery in Pharaoh’s Egypt, has opened the Red Sea before them (then promptly closed it up again upon the pursuing Egyptians), and has promised them a Land of their own.  Then: Amalekites, a people group absolutely opposed to that people and that plan.  And not just opposed in theory; they have begun to attack!

And the important lesson: we can’t soar alone.  But we can, if we learn to work according to God’s ways.

After you’ve read Exodus 17:8-16, do you see places in your life where you feel you just can’t ‘hold your arms up’ any longer, where you feel far more earthbound than soaring?  Who might God have ‘pre-positioned’ near you to help support and strengthen you?  Or, how might God be calling you to be an Aaron, a Hur, or a Joshua to some nearby Moses?

And: don’t forget to get in touch if you’re interested in exploring becoming a CD writer!
