A Prayer for a Broken Soul

1

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. (James 5:13-16 ESV)

Heavenly Father,

We stand in awe of you. Sometimes, it is difficult to see the gorgeous world that you have created. We pray that You will always help us see the beauty in Your creation, no matter how messy it can seem. When we don’t see your masterpiece, guide us to those who can cheerfully show us this world You have created. But when we do see Your works, Lord, help us to be joyful and sing Your praise.

Lord, help us to integrate prayer into our lives for the betterment of others. Maybe we pray for the woman crying on the bench, or maybe we pray that an old friend will come to church. Help us to pray for the healing of the spiritually and physically sick. Remind us that just a few words to You can change a person’s life for the better. Remind us to take care of each other, whether spiritually or emotionally or physically.

We ask for your forgiveness. As we make mistakes and sin against you, grant us your overflowing forgiveness. Remind us that we are forgiven in You, and that we should never take Your forgiveness for granted. We may not be perfect, but your grace never ceases to cover us with your love. For that, we thank you.

If we are struggling, if we are suffering, Jesus, help us to always remember to pray. Lead us to call upon you when we need you, and to not be ashamed of needing Your aid. There is no one like You who can help the powerless against the mighty. Remind us that You never leave our side in times of trouble.

Amen.
