A Mighty Good Leader

Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
- Psalm 24:7-8

David had a reputation for being a formidable warrior. He led troops in battle and did his fair share of fighting. His people sang songs about his prowess, much to the consternation of his rivals. He knew what it was like to return to his city and receive the celebratory and praise-filled welcome of his people.

In Psalm 24, David pulls back the curtain to help us see what was really going on during all of those battles in which he fought and earned praise. David might have been a good warrior, but the Lord was the one who was strong and mighty. Though the people may not have seen the Lord in action, he truly is worthy of their praise.

The really real is the place where God is at work. Our work takes place in the shadows. We have real work to do and real battles to fight. There’s no denying that. David had his scars and so do we. But above it all our King of glory wrestles for our freedom, safety and good.

When we praise our earthly leaders, let’s not forget to praise the Lord. He is the ultimate leader. He is the leader of leaders. Ultimately, he is the one we look to for safety and protection.

Leadership matters. There’s no denying that. But God is our one, true King. Good leaders are a blessing from him. We’re grateful to have them when we have them.

Would you take a moment today to praise God for being such an amazing leader? Thank God for being at work for our good even when we can’t see it. Ask God to bless us with good leaders in our workplaces, our government and our church.
