God's Compassionate Pursuit of Broken People - Jonah #4

Most people know there is a story in the Bible about a guy named Jonah who spent some time inside a big fish, but they may not know what the story of Jonah is supposed to teach us about our relationship with God. Jonah was a guy a lot like us—he believed many of the right things and did many good things as well. But that wasn’t the whole story. Like us, there were times when he didn’t much care what God had to say, and he chose to run away from God. Avoiding God’s commands may bring momentary happiness, but there is always a cost to running from God. Because God is ruthlessly committed to our joy, he pursues us and invites us to turn things around. Like a loving father, he disciplines his children in order to lead us to fullness of joy that lasts forever. Following God is a life-long process of learning to run with God rather than running away from God.

Defining Moments

We all have those defining moments in our lives that have shaped who we are today. That is true in upbringing, in our education, in our careers, in our families and other relationships, and certainly true in our relationship with God. God has prepared you for the work to which He has called you. He has prepared you for your defining moments.

Conflict and the Gospel #2 - Restoring our Horizontal Relationships

We all know something about conflict. We probably know more about it than we want. In a world filled with brokenness, it’s just a part of life. Too often, we respond to conflict with either an escape response (peace-faking) or an attack response (peace-breaking), but Jesus led us down a better path when he said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” What would happen if we started to see conflict as an opportunity? Conflict gives us the opportunity to glorify God, to serve another, to show off the grace of God, to live a healthier life, to grow to be more like Jesus. In week one of this short series, we explore the vertical relationship with God. In week two, we discover what it takes to fully restore the horizontal relationship between people. If we are going to enjoy the fullness of life that God desires for us, we must learn to deal with conflict in healthy, biblical, and God-honoring ways. This series offers much needed guidance for that journey.
