Do Something New

During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”
- 2 Samuel 23:13-14

The scene is set. David waits in his stronghold. The Philistine garrison sits in David’s hometown. David’s friends come to provide him with support.

What will happen next?

Will it be 40 days and nights of battle cries and deadlock?
Will David play the giant and challenge his opponents to a duel?
Will one of Goliath’s brothers show up?
Will the Philistines flee when they hear that David and his “chief warriors” are near?

Bethlehem stood inside Israelite territory. Having a Philistine garrison installed in this sleepy town meant that the band of Philistines didn’t just invade and raid, but planned to annex this territory for their own. This wouldn’t be news to David. He was stuck in his stronghold and couldn’t rescue his hometown.

The arrival of the three “chief warriors” opens up new possibilities. As we’ve said before, when God wants to do SOMETHING new he often sends SOMEONE new. In this case, the Lord sent three. They will write a new chapter to the story. This won’t be David and Goliath all over again. History never repeats itself exactly. And the new thing that happens here is remarkable.

When have you been stuck and needed the Lord to do something new? When have you tried to repeat old patterns of behavior, hoping for different results this time? What new people is the Lord sending into your life to lead you in new directions and next steps?
